1. Apply pre-shampoo bond repair, if using

Choose only the optional treatments your hair needs; Abbey does not use every treatment on every wash day. Separate the hair into halves, then smaller sections. Abbey sprays Epres until each section is saturated and waits at least 10 minutes. Check the instructions for your particular treatment rather than applying this timing to every brand.

Expose the inner sections before spraying.

2. Apply a little pre-shampoo oil

Spread oil across your palms and fingers. Finger-comb it from about jaw level to the ends, then repeat on the other side. Add a little more only to missed areas. Abbey leaves this for at least 20 minutes; she puts it after her initial bond-treatment wait.

Distribute oil through the lengths, not over the scalp.

3. Wet thoroughly and shampoo the scalp

Begin the scalp cleansing step by fully wetting the hair. Rub shampoo between your palms, lift sections away from the scalp, and massage the exposed roots with your fingertips. Work around the whole head, including the back. Use clarifying shampoo when needed or your regular formula.

Work the shampoo into the scalp beneath the hair.

4. Rinse, then decide whether to shampoo again

Rinse out the first wash completely. Abbey repeats her shampoo to catch areas she missed. A second wash is optional if one has already cleaned your scalp. Let the rinsing lather pass through your lengths rather than scrubbing them roughly.

Repeat the same scalp-focused technique if needed.

5. Use your post-shampoo treatment correctly

For K18, shampoo without conditioning first, towel-dry, then distribute the labeled amount through the hair. Abbey divides it between both sides and scrunches upward from the ends. Wait four minutes before other products and do not rinse it out. Other treatments may be rinse-out products, so follow their own instructions.

Start at the ends when distributing a limited amount of treatment.

6. Condition the inner sections

On an ordinary conditioning wash, squeeze out excess water. Divide the hair in half and smooth conditioner through the lengths and ends. Separate each half again to find any untreated hair. Add product to those areas, wait as directed, then rinse. If using K18, finish its wait first and follow its leave-in directions.

Separate the hair to check coverage underneath.

7. Apply one post-wash treatment, if needed

Towel-blot the hair. Abbey applies Living Proof Triple Bond Complex in sections and waits 10 minutes before other leave-ins. She also shows Pantene Pro-Vitamin Essence as an alternative. Choose one and follow its label, including any drying instructions.

Distribute the post-wash treatment before other leave-ins.

8. Spray leave-in conditioner section by section

For even leave-in conditioner application, divide each half into smaller sections. Spray the lengths and ends, including the underside. Hold a hand behind the section to catch excess spray and smooth it onto the hair. Use less if your hair feels coated or heavy.

Catch excess spray with your hand and distribute it.

9. Add styling product and dry

Apply any styling cream or other styler according to its directions, then air-dry or blow-dry. Use suitable heat protection before heat styling. Abbey discusses this stage rather than teaching a specific blowout in this video.

Abbey explains where styling fits in the routine.

10. Finish with a small amount of serum or oil

Choose one finishing product. Spread a little through your hands and lightly finger-comb the lengths. Abbey generally uses oils after drying and lighter serums before drying. Check your product label and add more only if needed.

Keep the finishing layer light.

11. Refresh only what needs it between washes

If the ends feel dry, finger-comb in a small amount of leave-in product. If you use dry shampoo, apply it at the roots as directed. Before hot-tool touch-ups, apply a protectant suitable for dry hair and let it dry.

Use small amounts when refreshing dry hair.
