Use the pointed end of a comb to section off a triangle of hair at the front. Clip it out of the way. Leave the rest loose for the ponytail. Keeping this front piece separate lets you choose a lower direction for the middle part later.

2. Smooth the roots and make a ponytail
Apply hairspray to the first couple of inches at the roots of the loose section. Brush it back and secure a ponytail, following an upward line from the cheekbone. The base of this slicked back bun should feel secure but comfortable. If the style pulls or hurts, loosen it before continuing.
3. Part the front and brush it lower
For a smooth center part hairstyle, release the front section and make a clean middle part with the tail comb. Add a little hairspray, then brush each side back at a lower angle than the ponytail. Join both pieces to the ponytail, smoothing the surface as you go.
4. Twist and secure the bun
Twist the ponytail, wrap it around its base and secure it with an elastic. Chris leaves the ends sticking out rather than tucking them away. Adjust the shape with your fingers and use a little more hairspray only where the surface needs smoothing.

5. Finish the ends and hairline
For the optional flicked ends, use a straightener according to its instructions on dry hair with suitable heat protection. Chris then brushes root powder into visible gaps at the hairline and shapes small front hairs. You can also leave the ends natural and skip the powder.
